ICT Skills Development in the Western Cape
The Cape IT Initiative has committed itself, via its CAPACITI 1000 programme, to increase the pool of ICT-related skills
in the Western Cape by 1000 by March 2013. This is an industry needs led programme aimed at increasing the competitiveness
of companies in the Western Cape by coordinating and raising funding for training and internship programmes aimed at
addressing critical skills shortages, both in “knowledge skills” (like Business Analysis ) as well as “factory skills”
(like Java, PHP and .net programming, software testing and other skills).
The programme works as follows: We survey companies (across all verticals including financial services, retail, media
and ICT) and establish what their skills needs are. Then, in association with other stakeholders, we put together, raise
funding for and implement multi-company and multi-stakeholder programmes to address these needs.
We are currently recruiting for our first such programme – the CAPACITI 1000 Business Analysis and Systems Analysis Training
and Internship programme which aims to grow the pool of Business Analysts in the Cape insurance sector through a part-time
training and 12 month internship programme for graduates and others with no previous IT training in Business Analysis and
Systems Analysis.
We are currently working on a funding proposal to train the following skills: Oracle/Java and IBM RPG and Legacy.
This project will be run in conjunction with IBM, Oracle Academy, the CIO Forum and CPUT. These programmes are being
driven by CITi Executive Director, Jenny McKinnell.
