ICT Skills Development in the Western Cape

CIO Research   |    ICT Skills Development in the Western Cape

The Cape IT Initiative has committed itself, via its CAPACITI 1000 programme, to increase the pool of ICT-related skills in the Western Cape by 1000 by March 2013. This is an industry needs led programme aimed at increasing the competitiveness of companies in the Western Cape by coordinating and raising funding for training and internship programmes aimed at addressing critical skills shortages, both in “knowledge skills” (like Business Analysis ) as well as “factory skills” (like Java, PHP and .net programming, software testing and other skills).

The programme works as follows: We survey companies (across all verticals including financial services, retail, media and ICT) and establish what their skills needs are. Then, in association with other stakeholders, we put together, raise funding for and implement multi-company and multi-stakeholder programmes to address these needs.

We are currently recruiting for our first such programme – the CAPACITI 1000 Business Analysis and Systems Analysis Training and Internship programme which aims to grow the pool of Business Analysts in the Cape insurance sector through a part-time training and 12 month internship programme for graduates and others with no previous IT training in Business Analysis and Systems Analysis.

We are currently working on a funding proposal to train the following skills: Oracle/Java and IBM RPG and Legacy. This project will be run in conjunction with IBM, Oracle Academy, the CIO Forum and CPUT. These programmes are being driven by CITi Executive Director, Jenny McKinnell.

CONNECTING PEOPLE THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS - JOIN US
The research community and forum is open to Chief Information Officers (CIOs), Academics, Professionals, Industry, Corporates, Government, Graduates, Students and other stakeholders.
CenCRA and the CIO Forum provides CIOs with insight into the academic program, research and initiatives being undertaken by participating universities. It also enables academics to share, learn and engage with key decision makers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
Our desire is to connect people and breakdown barriers. We build relationships with those who are active on the ground and passionate about making a difference. The online forum and events are managed through social networks. Social networks avoid bureaucracies, remove impediments and build bridges that connect individuals directly.
