Business Driven ICT Research in the Western Cape
Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town
We are hosting a CIO Research Colloquium on the 10th and 11th of March 2011.
The aim of the colloquium is to develop areas of research focus for those involved in research
or contemplating research at a Masters or Doctorate level. The event will also showcase existing
research by students and is aimed to create potential partnerships with the broader business
community on research related to the Information Technology and Communications (ICT).
We are inviting Chief Information Officers (CIOs) to discuss specific areas of focus and
interest to help bring academic research and industry closer together in forming research partnerships.
Exhibits - Research
The exhibits are open to any students, academics or industry partners who wish to showcase their
research for the purpose of attracting partners and participants. These will be similar to the
research exhibits at the IEEE Internation Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) in 2010 hosted
in Cape Town which provided a great opportunity to find out about research and encourage collaborations.
The academic panels for each session will include academics from the 4 universities in the
Western Cape:
- The University of Cape Town
- Stellenbosch University
- The University of the Western Cape
- The Cape Peninsula University of Technology
Outcomes
Research groups will be formed from the colloquium from which industry and academic
partnerships will be identified as well as researchers and students.
Who Should Attend
The audience of the colloquium includes researchers with academic, industry or business backgrounds
as well as other stakeholders and partners.
- Postgraduate students, researchers and academics
- Chief Information Officers (CIOs) interested in leveraging ICT research
- IT professionals wanting to improve their qualifications
- Industry and business companies wanting partner in research
- Research funders and investors seeking research partnerships
We would also like to encourage learners, students and graduates who are interested in ICT careers.
A Commercial Enterprise from a University Research Project

Canada. It produces and distributes computer software applications designed to enable enterprise
content management solutions for large corporate and government systems. The company, which was incorporated
in 1991, originated from a project at the University of Waterloo to create an electronic Oxford
English Dictionary, an undertaking that required developing search technologies that could be used
to quickly index and retrieve information.
